Awareness Day Event – May 7th, 2013

International Awareness Day for Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, Fibromyalgia and Multiple Chemical Sensitivities – May 12th

Meao’s 2013 Awareness Day Event – A Success!

(By: Denise Magi)

May 12th is the official awareness day for Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia and Environmental Sensitivities/Multiple Chemical Sensitivities  and because the actual day was on a week-end, MEAO held its awareness day event on May 7th at Queen’s Park.

We here at MEAO are delighted with the turnout of both our membership and the MPP's, and of course, Premier Kathleen Wynne on May 7th, and the day was a big success!

Premier Wynne to say the very least, was extremely busy and she dropped in to say hello and show support.  We thank her very much.

We send a big thank you to our sponsoring MPP, Joe Dickson, for his continued support and very kind words.

We send a big thank you to all of you who came out to our event - we were so happy to see you and apologies if I did not have time to speak to each of you for as long as I would have like to - it was kind of busy!

It seems that no matter what time of the day these events are planned for, it is difficult for the MPP's schedules due to their attendance in the Legislative Assembly and their business changes every single day in the Assembly.

The MPP’s and Ministers that attended were:

Premier Kathleen Wynne, Bill Walker, Michael Coteau, Dipika Damerla, Cheri DiNovo, France Gelinas, Paul Miller, John O’Toole, Michael Prue, Joe Dickson, Frank Klees, Jack MacLaren, Julia Munro and the executive assistants for Ted Chudleigh and Dr. Shafiq Qaadri.

In the remarks that I delivered, I described our Ontario Trillium Grant/Quality of Care project and the results are being worked upon and will be delivered soon.

I also described our new partnership with the Association of Ontario Health Centres.
In brief,  MEAO and AOHC will work together to align two studies which will ultimately be submitted to the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care and other health system agencies, all with the view of ultimately enhancing the health care delivery system for ME, FM and MCS among other chronic, complex environmentally linked illnesses.

There will be more to come on this later and we will, of course, keep you advised of all developments.

We thank Adrianna Tetley, the Executive Director of AOHC for her remarks at our event and her in depth explanations of what the partnership and the studies hope to achieve with the results.  This is all wonderful news for our communities!  There will be more information for you in the coming weeks.

We thank Dr. Lynn Marshall, of the Environmental Health Clinic, for her remarks at our event and her insightful description of the ME, FM and MCS and the impact they have on health and the social impact they have etc.

We all know that better health care is needed for all patients with ME/CFS, FM and MCS/ES, three chronic, complex environmentally linked illnesses and we at MEAO are working very hard towards this goal.

Pictures will be posted shortly.

Thank you all for your support.
